The Wandering Earth II: A Celestial Phenomenon in UK Cinemas!

The Wandering Earth II, a magnificent Chinese sci-fi film, has shattered box office records in the UK, becoming the highest-grossing Chinese movie in the British market in 15 years, according to Trinity CineAsia. With the film screening in over 50 cinemas across 30 cities in the UK and Ireland, it has taken the top spot in terms of opening weekend box office among Chinese-language films in the UK.

Released in UK cinemas on January 27, just a week after its debut in China and the US, this interstellar blockbuster is a prequel to the original, which was a box office success, earning $700 million. The film depicts a story set several years before the events of the first movie as humanity builds engines to propel the planet to a new solar system due to the rapidly expanding sun.

Wandering Earth 2’ Adds Andy Lau, Will Begin Production in the Fall After Being Approved by Censors

The Wandering Earth II, based on the popular novella by science fiction author Liu Cixin, is directed by Frant Gwo and stars Wu Jing alongside a talented cast including Andy Lau, Li Xuejian, Sha Yi, Ning Li, Wang Zhi, and Zhu Yanmanzi. The stunning visuals and incredible performance of the cast members have made the film a hit with audiences, with around 80% of the UK box office revenue coming from Chinese people, mainly overseas students and those living in the UK.

The highly anticipated sequel, "Wandering Earth II", has added legendary actor Andy Lau to its star-studded cast, and is set to start production this fall. The news comes after the film received approval from the censors, a crucial step in the movie-making process. The original "Wandering Earth" film was a blockbuster hit and established itself as one of the most successful Chinese sci-fi films of all time. The sequel will pick up where the first film left off and promises to be even more epic, with stunning visuals and an all-star cast. With Andy Lau on board, this film is sure to capture the hearts and imaginations of audiences both in China and around the world. Get ready for an interstellar journey like no other when "Wandering Earth II" blasts off into theaters!

Despite the film's success, the British film market remains small for Chinese-language films. Unlike kung fu films, which have a larger audience base in the UK, other types of Chinese-language films are less popular. Although the film features different languages, there is only a limited amount of English spoken.

According to Manda Tang, marketing manager at Trinity CineAsia, audiences are generally not fond of watching foreign-language movies with subtitles, unless it's a famous Oscar-winning film like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The attendance rate for The Wandering Earth II has far exceeded expectations, with moviegoers eager to share their excitement and feelings.

Chris Berry, a professor of Film Studies at King's College London, noted the high production values of the film, saying the effort to tell a global story, not just a Chinese story, and to reach out to the world, is very ambitious. The film tries to connect two sets of Chinese values with global values: the importance of family and self-sacrifice. Berry believes the film has all the qualities that enable it to reach out to audiences worldwide.

Catch The Wandering Earth II in UK cinemas until February 16 and experience a celestial journey unlike any other!
