Google, the world's leading search engine, is stepping up its AI game to compete with the growing popularity of chatbots, especially OpenAI's ChatGPT. In a bid to stay ahead of the trend, the company is preparing to unveil a search engine with chatbot features along with over 20 other AI projects, according to The New York Times.
The challenge to Google has been further intensified by Microsoft's recent partnership with OpenAI and the integration of ChatGPT into Bing. In response, Google has involved its co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin in the development of its chatbot search engine to ensure its competitiveness in the market.
The demo of the chatbot will place a strong emphasis on accuracy, safety, and combating misinformation. Google is also working on several other AI projects such as an image generation tool, a product prototype testing app, and a green screen mode for YouTube similar to TikTok.
Despite the growing competition, Google is proceeding with caution and has strengthened its product approval processes, including fairness and ethics reviews. The company plans to showcase its upcoming projects at the May I/O conference, where CEO Sundar Pichai stated that Google is preparing to show "some entirely new experiences for users, developers, and businesses."
However, the focus on AI projects has come at a cost for Google, as the company faced criticism for laying off over 12,000 employees. Nevertheless, the company's recognition of the growth of ChatGPT and its efforts to stay ahead of the trend in AI technology indicates its commitment to innovation and providing users with the best possible experiences.
